View Article  Thank you for your Thoughts, Love and Warm Wishes...

Hello Everyone,

It has been so great to hear from all of you. I am so greatful to have friends, family and people who I don't even know reach out and feel what they think I must be going thourgh. You can't even imagine. Life exists in different relams all at the same time. The realm that feels the loss of a tremendous love, the realm that says you must keep moving forward, the realm where everyone else's love is a band-aid that you are glad is there even though it does not stop the bleeding.

You contacting me gives me faith in humanity so I do appreciate the notes, cards and letters. I feel a little overwhelmed with returning all of them so please know that I receive your blessings in the highest. You have taken time to reach out and speak to me personally at a time when I have lost the world's most precious comodity, love.

There is so much happening in the world. So much that we see on the news, and are bombarded with in our daily lives. It seems incredible to me that anyone would have enough time out to pay attention or even think about my journey for more than 5 seconds.

I truely appreciate you reaching out. I have wonderful friends and family who check in on me but, after the phone call is over, I am left with my thoughts and memories. I have my moments every day. Right now the moments are sad even though the memories are beautiful. Eventually the sadness will turn in to smiles but, who knows when that will happen. One million people can't do anything to make the pain in your heart go away.

I am only one person. So many others have lost friends and love ones in the war, in accidents and all kinds of other scenarios. I am just one man who's heart aches and I thank you for caring. When you have someone in your life that is such a beautiful soul, you can never forget how her inspiration, love and overall positiveness helped get you through you days. I miss her so much and I have to keep going forward. We had so many beautiful moments. I will cherish those forever.

Even though I have many people to talk to and who are stepping up to be in my corner, it is nice to write to you here. The you who know me and the you who don't. This expression feels like a cognitive communication that reaches everyone with no strings. As long as love is felt and the message is heard I know things will be alright. I hope everyone who takes the time to read about and experience Hydeus via this blog will go home and spread love to those around them. That was Hydeus' gift; the gift of her ever abundant unconditional love. She lived her life here and everafter though her music and peaceful natural way of wanting to make a difference. Don't let her down. Spread your love and her love will continue!

Thank you so very much

LeRoy

Dear Family and Friends,

It is very hard to believe, but it has now been 2 months since our dear Hydeus transitioned to her next journey. We have heard from so many of you and received your generous donations for her memorial project, and EVENTUALLY you will receive an appropriate acknowledgment, but for now, know that we are so very appreciative of all the support and gifts that have come our wayprayers (and we have all had incredible peace because of them), gifts of time, food, presence, flowers, talents, lodging, meals and meals and meals, hugs, cards, money, friendship and anything I might have forgotten to mention. Thank you, thank you, thank you. You have each made a huge positive difference in this journey of craziness.

Before anything else, I want to remind you to go to the site that Lee created that continues to have updated pictures and notes and reminders of Hydeus. Just click on this web site

http://www.thejazzcat.net/blog/_archives/2005/7/21/1059292.html

or type it into your web bar and then click on the icon next to Hydeus name. As you go through the site, click on each area that says to click on it and you can hear her in concert and read great articles. If you get lost, just click the back arrow and it will take you back to the first page. If you have troublesemail me. Enjoy!!

We did have three wonderful services for hera rosary at the funeral home that was conducted by a long time friend, Brian Finegan, who did an outstanding job of helping everyone to understand the ceremony and enjoy the peaceful time. Weber Iago, a long time friend of Hydeus, and a fabulous jazz pianist played for the ceremony.

The following day we had a beautiful Mass celebrated by Fr. Barry Brunsman and coordinated by our dear friends Karen and Philip Lips. It was at the Church In the Forest, on the school property where all of the girls went to high school. Three dear jazz musician (and personal) friends played jazz music that was so beautifulPete Lips, a best friend/surrogate brother, who coordinated all of the music for the ceremonies, Bif Smith, a dear friend, colleague and former teacher of Hydeus and Patrick Tregenza, drummer extra ordinaire, colleague and friend. Aimee Puentes, a long time childhood through adulthood friend and an accomplished opera vocalist, graced us with an amazing rendition of The Lords Prayer. Spence Myers accompanied Hydeus final journey with fabulous bag pipes.

Following the Mass we had a Celebration of Life at a local hotel. Lee and Jenny spent hours and hours coordinating the celebration and putting together film of Hydeus early life and her more recent performances. Many people spoke of their journey with Hydeus. Heather and Hydeus friend Kelly Thornberry Majid set up amazing alters in Hydeus memory. Several jazz musicians graced us with musicSteve Robinson and Eddie Mendenhall, among them. Thank you everyonehopefully I didnt forget anyone. Im sure I probably did.

If you were there and we missed seeing you, thank you for coming. If you were not able to come, know that your thoughts and prayers were felt. So many family and friends of Hydeus, ours, Lees were with usthank you to everyone.

In the spring we will have a family celebration to scatter her ashes at sea and also to bury a portion in the local cemetery in Monterey.

We are still finalizing the memorial in her honor. It will be through the Monterey Jazz Festival and will go toward youth music. We will let you know what the final arrangement is. We also hope to have a small memorial at Stevenson School (her high school) and USC , where she was working on her Masters in Vocal Jazz and Composition.

We are all doing fairly welleveryone a little differently. Lee moves forward and will go to New York this next week for the International Jazz Educators Institute that he and Hydeus attended last year and Hydeus loved so very much.http://www.thejazzcat.net

Tom and I and Jenny and Heather, Rick and Cash went to a beach house for Christmas Eve, Christmas and another day. It was a perfect diversion. Everyone has his/her moments of sorrow and many moments of fond, fun memories.

The final week Hydeus was with us was a week of the full moon that she was outside enjoying at 3:00 AM!!! The 2 full moons that have come since have her name all over them. Enjoy her memory as you go through life noticing each full moon.

Jenny is back in New York. Heather and Rick and Cash are a busy little familyCash is as cute as can be5 months old. Ms. Hydeus is in all of our hearts. Everyone is back working and moving forward. Thank you for your prayers and concernsmostly for you friendship.

Much love,

Shirley and Tom and family

View Article  An Update on Hydeus From Her Mother

Hello dear family and friends,

I am hanging by an angel thread and I just wrote an update on Hydeus and
lost it in computer land, so I will try again with the graces that flow
around me.

We look for a miracle, and ask you to continue to put it out there, but
meanwhile our dear daughter is having quite a difficult journey

It has been 18 months.  She was admitted to the hospital last week with
breathing difficulty and will be released tomorrow to go home with us to
Salinas.  Lee, who is an angel in her life, will go with us and Jenny, who
is here from New York( who is also an angel) will be with us, too. And, of
course, Heather, Rick. Cash and Kent are also angels in her life.

Hydeus has put up an amazing fight.  She is now very very ill--liver
failing, kidneys failing, not eligible for any more research studies.  We
feel she has had the very best of everything---medical care, research
studies, support systems, friends, school, a fabulous partner, family and
still her journey is not what we ordered.

She will travel by Angel Flights from LA to Monterey and then be admitted to
a hospice program.
The doctors say she has days to weeks to live.  Without a miracle, we will
miss her unbelievably.  We are all trying to stay in the present and have
her be with us as long as possible.

She is loved by everyone.  Her collegues, professors, students and friends
are giving a benefit concert at University of Southern California on Friday
November 3.  I am attaching a link that was set up by Lee that will give you
details and many many pictures of this dear child.  I do not know if any of
us will be able to attend, but encourage all of you to go---it is going to
be awesome.Click on the following site  to access the information.

Anyone is welcome to come by our home--Maybe, best to call first

town.

Hydeus at thePlayboy Jazz Festival at the Hollywood Bowl

It has been some time since I’ve written.  I have been wanting to and the days seem to move along and time passes by.  A friend recently asked me if it is therapeutic for me to write about my experience and share it with the people in my life.  My response was a quick and easy “yes” but since then I’ve given it more thought and have realized that it is actually VERY therapeutic, not only in expressing my thoughts and feelings but in the beautiful outpouring of loving messages and energy that always flow back to me.  So, I thank you for being my sounding board and for responding to me in a loving and supportive way.  I hope you enjoy receiving my emails and get some value out of reading them and knowing what’s going on in my world.  There are so many different kinds of people that have grown to be on my email list through years of promoting, performing and working on various creative music projects.  Some of you are my nearest and dearest and some just signed up on my email to find out about the next gig or CD project that was coming up and some of you wound up in my world through a friend of a friend.  In any case, I find myself sharing my journey with you.  If you want to be taken off the list, please just let me know and I’ll gladly do it.

It has been a challenging few months for me but I can honestly say I am feeling quite a lot better these days.  I continue with chemotherapy treatments for metastatic colon-cancer that has been hanging out in my liver and lungs.  My regimen was switched about a month ago after scans showed that the last group of drugs wasn’t doing me much good.  I hope and pray that what I am currently on is doing the job.  A big part of my “feeling better” really has to do with the way I’ve had to be pro-active with my treatment and discover what I need to support me completely-body, mind and spirit.  As I continue to use conventional chemo drug treatments, I have also sought out other resources and healing methods to support me.  It has been quite exhausting at times getting to support groups, meditation workshops, acupuncture treatments, counseling appointments, yoga classes, creative writing/healing workshops… but I feel this is starting to pay off because I have found some outlets to deal not only with the physical but mental and emotional roller coaster ride that fighting cancer is.  I hoped this would be over, I have other plans for my life, but I am here, living the best I possibly can.

I have been putting performing on hold these last months due to my fatigue and the unpredictability of some of the side effects I deal with.  My creative energies have rather been drawn much more toward writing, both words and music.  This is a realm I love to be in and find creatively fulfilling.   I will be returning to school at USC Thornton School of Music next week to continue my masters program.  I am looking very forward to returning and being in that enriching environment again.

So the journey continues, the search for answers and healing.  The search for energy, vitality, creativity, love, light, joy, insight.  Where does this lead us, where does it lead me?  The quest for knowledge and wisdom inside of the challenges.  How does one find peace inside of a storm?  How does one find inspiration when dreams are put on hold?  These are the questions my mind is filled with daily.  Thank you for your gifts of love and friendship.  They do help bring me peace.

Love and light,

Hydeus

I have decided to begin what I am calling my "journey log".  I'd like to share with you some of the thoughts and insights I am having as I delve into new areas of exploration with regards to my healing and well being.  I refuse to let this disease I am dealing with define my life, my well being and quite simply, me.  As I journey on, I discover deeper and deeper layers of potential healing and wisdom.

Lately, I have returned to my joy of writing in a journal after stopping for many years.  Growing up, I always had a journal going and I loved the release of thoughts and feelings as I let them just pour out of me onto the page.  It was healing, and as I am uncovering the multitude of healing tools and methods out there, I've been drawn back into journaling.  At the same time, I am reading, researching, meditating and building new thoughts and visions about life and the journey of my path.   I see how my own experience folds out into layers of healing and well being regarding the world we all live in.  I believe that what I contribute to this life, as what we all contribute, affects and changes the world as we know it.  I strive and long to give what will make a postive impact.

You, my community; my family, my friends, my music supporters, my teachers, my students, all make this world a beautiful place for me to journey.  I acknowledge you for that and for enriching my life with both joy and depth.

Peace to you,

Hydeus

Dear Family and Friends,

After many months of feeling poorly, Hydeus, age 32, was diagnosed with colon cancer with metastasis to her liver.  In late May, she had colo-rectal surgery at LAC+USC Hospital in Los Angeles to remove the tumor in her colon.  She is recovering well from surgery and will begin chemotherapy on July 8th.  After six months of chemotherapy, hopefully with disappearance of the liver lesions, she will undergo surgery on her liver.  Through it all she maintains a positive attitude and looks forward to being well again.

Hydeus is scheduled to begin graduate school in August at University of Southern California, in Jazz studies, with an emphasis on performance and composition.  She is still planning on beginning the program in the fall, in hopes that the chemotherapy will give her only minimal side effects.  Her employers--LA Philharmonic and the Park's Department where she teaches music lessons-- are supportive and holding her positions for her, although, at this time, she is not able to work because of how poorly she is feeling.

Needless to say, we are asking for positive prayer and thought and whatever your means of believing in miracles constitutes.  We are also launching a fundraiser to help Hydeus with the extra financial burden of being sick and unable to work.  This money will supplement her limited medical and financial resources and provide for her to receive added treatments that will enhance her medical journey.

We are calling this the  $10.00 from EVERYONE Campaign.

We encourage you to involve your entire family and pass the information on to your family and friends with a personal note from you.  Everyone who receives this letter is encouraged to pass it on.  When Hydeus is well, the world will surely benefit by your generosity.

My family and I have received so many offers to help us out in a variety of ways during my treatment. I will be having liver surgery on January 20th when about 2/3 of my liver will be removed along with the two tumors that are present.

I am so grateful for all of the prayers and offers to help. I truly feel the power that prayer and positive thoughts and energy provide. I am blessed with a hopeful attitude and a calm spirit throughout this ordeal.

If you would like to help out, whether that be with a meal or a ride or groceries or anything else, please let us know and we will add you to our list of angel helpers.

I wish you all a beautiful 2006 and thank you so very much for the blessings you bring to my life.

Update regarding Hydeus

The outpouring of support to our entire family, from family, friends, and friends of friends has been incredible and we all thank you for your prayers and thoughts and concern.  It is a wonderful thing to be surrounded by such great energy.

We are all aware of just what those prayers are doing--a major result is a state of peacefulness for all of us most of the time.  We are very positive and feel certain that Hydeus will have a full recovery and go forth to live an abundant life.

It has now been 4 1/2 weeks since her surgery and she is recovering well.  She has had her baseline CT scans with no change in the lesions in her liver and no lesions noted anywhere else, and she has had a portacath inserted so she can receive her IV chemotherapy.

She will start chemotherapy on July 8 and will be enrolled in a study at LAC+USC in LA.  She will take an oral pill twice daily and every two weeks she will go into the oncology office for 4+ hours of IV infusion of 2 other agents.  We do not know what the side effects will be until she gets started.  Prayer for them to be minimal or nonexistent would be good!

Through this ordeal, she has also been plagued by a herniated lumbar disc that causes her much discomfort in her hip and leg.  She is scheduled to receive an epidural of steroid medication this week with the hope that the symptoms will be relieved and the process of healing will begin.

Her energy has improved as her anemia is resolving.  Her symptoms of abdominal discomfort are improving as she mends from her surgery.

She continues to have an amazingly positive attitude--what a force she is going to be when she is well!

She, and we, are trying to manage alternating her care between LA and Salinas with the hope that she will soon be able to live a full life in LA with her great support community. She continues to make plans to attend graduate school at USC in Jazz Studies--vocal performance and composition.

We love hearing from you.  Thank you for being there.

Love,

The Kiatta Family and their partners

Hi everyone,

I am starting to get excited for my birthday.  So far, between the "yes" and "maybe" responses to my evite for my show, 80 people have responded that they will come or try to.  I have also been passing out quite a few flyers to other folks.

Other exciting things on the horizon-Gary Hamada at the Jazz and Blues Company, who is restarting up Black Hawk Records that he once ran with Bill Graham, would like me to come up to Carmel for a meeting.  They are very interested in having me as an artist on their new label and I will most likely do a show at the Jazz and Blues Co. in either Oct, Nov or Dec.  Very exciting!!

Tomorrow is the last day for my Childrens Arts Institute singing class.  We will do a performance in the evening.  It has been great fun!!

Well, it is late and I must go to sleep.  Love you all!!!
